In this memorable and moving memoir, author Carolyn Haynes tells the story of the life of actor Lloyd Haynes, star of the critically acclaimed television series Room 222.

As a mixed-race person, I found this memoir to be very poignant indeed, and the issues it highlights in terms of race and the challenges faced and overcome by Lloyd Haynes in the acting industry, were truly remarkable. Haynes was told in his youth that the outlook for his career would be limited, but, as this well-crafted memoir reveals, this was most certainly not the case.

It’s an inspiring and intimate story, and Carolyn Haynes does a fine job of telling it with passion, humour, and grace. I don’t usually read memoirs, but was nicely surprised to find this one engrossing, mainly because it was written with such fine attention to detail and plenty of heart, too. For example, the tasty dishes Lloyd cooked for his family was a wonderful detail to include in the narrative. Giving insight into the very different world of showbiz and acting in the 1960s-1980s, Lloyd Haynes played teacher, Pete Dixon, in Room 222, which debuted in 1969.

The sheer magnitude of Carolyn’s love for Lloyd really shines through, and this is a love story that really tugged at the heartstrings. It really reached out to me as a reader. I also thought that the structural layout of the text, which included photographs, notes, articles, and other snippets of information, kept the readers’ interest, adding a unique dimension to the book. All in all, if you’re seeking a heart-warming memoir for the winter months ahead, I’d thoroughly recommend Carolyn’s moving memoir. It is fascinating reading and will appeal to those who love a good underdog story!

Wonderful review, Ada, of Carolyn Hayne’s book! Lloyd Haynes was an exceptional actor, and Carolyn is a beloved blogger who writes exceptionally well.

I meant to say “Carolyn Haynes’ book,” not “Carolyn Hayne’s book.” Apostrophe in the wrong place. Sorry.

Hello Dave! How nice to see you. Hah! Yes, the dreaded apostrophe — the bane of a writer’s existence, lol! Carolyn’s memoir is indeed excellent, and I learned a lot about Lloyd Haynes and the challenges he had to overcome in his career in this memoir. I enjoyed her intimate and relatable style of writing; it really reached out to the reader. Thanks for the kind comments and for stopping by! 💜☺

Lol… the apostrophe. Dreaded indeed. I mind once getting hell at school from some teacher along the lines of how can you have won this writing comp and you don’t the difference. Why don’t you know the difference when you were clearly taught it. and I said, ‘Cos I was looking out the window making up a story at the time….

You’re very welcome, Ada! 🙂 Yes, the apostrophe can be fraught sometimes. 🙂 As I’ve told Carolyn, I used to watch (and love) “Room 222” as a kid, and it has been fascinating to learn more about Lloyd Haynes through Carolyn’s superb writing.

Yes, indeed, Dave. I’m planning on watching “Room 222” now, as well. And yes, her writing is indeed wonderful; the memoir really shines because of her unique way of telling the very special and amazing life story of Lloyd Haynes. 💛🙂

”written with such fine attention to detail and plenty of heart” – I love the way it sounds. I have to say that one of my favourite non-fiction genres is memoirs – it’s so engaging to see someone tell their own story in their own words! Also – a memoir provides a delicious self-indulgent journey where we are not left to wonder, and where we can peer into emotions and motivations. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Your thoughts are most interesting, and I see what you mean: it is engaging to see someone tell their own story and to get that special glimpse behind the veil, so to speak! I was actually contemplating looking into Cher’s memoirs (I think it’s in two parts), as I loved her songs when I was a young thing! Thanks for stopping by and your support 💜🙂📘

Ada—What an awesome surprise… Thank you so much for your heartfelt and thoughtful review of my book. Your words truly moved me, and it means so much that Lloyd’s story resonated with you so deeply. Knowing that the themes of perseverance, love, and the challenges of navigating race in the acting industry struck a chord with you is incredibly meaningful.

I’m especially touched by your appreciation for the personal details, like Lloyd’s love for cooking and the structural elements of the memoir. These were such important aspects for me to include, as they help paint a fuller picture of the man Lloyd was—his warmth, his passion, and his resilience.

Your kind acknowledgment of my love for Lloyd shining through the pages means more than I can say. This book was a labor of love, and it’s readers like you who make the journey of writing it so rewarding. Thank you for not only reading the memoir but for sharing such a beautifully written and generous reflection.

I’m truly grateful, for this priceless holiday gift!!! 😃♥️

      Hello Carolyn!

Thank you for your kind words! I’m so glad you liked the review and felt that it lived up to the wonderful book you wrote, which was a testament of not only your love for such an amazing man and actor, but also of a life lived with challenges, triumphs, struggles, and achievements along the way. Yes, Lloyd’s warmth, passion and resilience was definitely captured in your book, along with the healing and emotionally restoring effects of true love as well. This is an inspiring story for a mixed-race person such as myself, as, even today, it can be hard to be acknowledged in a predominantly white society, let alone to achieve the success and fame that Lloyd achieved. But you show, through your wonderful, insightful writing, that dreams can come true, but also that there’s no such thing as a “simple” path to following those dreams, so keep believing! Your writing really makes this book shine; it was so moving, and a credit to your skills as a writer.

Thanks for checking it out and your kind feedback!

      Happy holidays!!🎅

Thank you for your thoughtful words and for connecting so deeply with the story. It’s readers like you who make all the effort truly meaningful.
