In this memorable and moving memoir, author Carolyn Haynes tells the story of the life of actor Lloyd Haynes, star of the critically acclaimed television series Room 222.
As a mixed-race person, I found this memoir to be very poignant indeed, and the issues it highlights in terms of race and the challenges faced and overcome by Lloyd Haynes in the acting industry, were truly remarkable. Haynes was told in his youth that the outlook for his career would be limited, but, as this well-crafted memoir reveals, this was most certainly not the case.
It’s an inspiring and intimate story, and Carolyn Haynes does a fine job of telling it with passion, humour, and grace. I don’t usually read memoirs, but was nicely surprised to find this one engrossing, mainly because it was written with such fine attention to detail and plenty of heart, too. For example, the tasty dishes Lloyd cooked for his family was a wonderful detail to include in the narrative. Giving insight into the very different world of showbiz and acting in the 1960s-1980s, Lloyd Haynes played teacher, Pete Dixon, in Room 222, which debuted in 1969.
The sheer magnitude of Carolyn’s love for Lloyd really shines through, and this is a love story that really tugged at the heartstrings. It really reached out to me as a reader. I also thought that the structural layout of the text, which included photographs, notes, articles, and other snippets of information, kept the readers’ interest, adding a unique dimension to the book. All in all, if you’re seeking a heart-warming memoir for the winter months ahead, I’d thoroughly recommend Carolyn’s moving memoir. It is fascinating reading and will appeal to those who love a good underdog story!
