Book Review: When Secrets Bloom by Patricia Furstenberg

Interested in literary fiction with an immersive historical setting? When Secrets Bloom is a historical fiction novel set in 1463 Transylvania.

This intricate and beautifully written story follows two characters: Kate, who is a healer and midwife, and Moise, a printer’s apprentice. Kate once fought at the side of Vlad Dracula (she was once held in captivity by him) and is now a healer in Kronstadt. However, by doing this, she’s leaving herself vulnerable to being labelled a witch, so she needs to tread carefully.

Kate’s stuck in an unfulfilling marriage, while Moise is a Jewish printer with his own set of problems. One thing I must stress at the outset is the truly fantastic Transylvanian setting! It simply took my breath away! Readers of atmospheric stories are going to love this book; it transported me to another realm! I also really enjoyed the fascinating exploration of the history of Transylvania, alongside its superstitions and the false beliefs that pervaded society at this time.

The elusive presence of Lord Vlad Dracula filters through the narrative, and found myself wanting to learn more about Kate’s unique relationship with him. The author’s approach to his character is fascinating and compelling. As someone who’s always craved a different take on the well-known Dracula story, I was very engaged with Kate’s perspective. We get an idea of him as a warrior and exile, not just a vampire. The prose is lyrical and sort of holds the reader in a trance-like state. I’d strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves immersive, emotionally (and culturally) enriching stories, with a strong female protagonist!

Hi Rosaliene, thanks so much! You’re very kind. Yes, I enjoyed When Secrets Bloom; it swept me away to a different world. Kate’s an amazing protagonist, who I could easily relate to on so many levels, and her relationship with Vlad Dracula is fascinating. I learned a lot about Transylvanian history, too, which was super cool! Hope you had a nice Easter break.🌸

That is a beautiful and poignant poem. Trees and other plants are amazing creatures and very valuable. When you cut down a tree other trees step in to deliver nutrients to the stump via the roots. I just finished reading a book about plants (light eaters) and plants are indeed underestimated. They communicate via fungi, microbes, chemicals, sound, light, and in ways we have not yet figured out. There are plants that imitiate the almost exact look ( especially the leaves) of other plants from a distance. There are plants that enlist insects to guard against or kill other insects that are a threat to them. And much more. The book speculated that plants may have a type of intelligence. Anyway, you wrote a great review for Patricia’s book.

Oh, wow, Thomas, I had no idea trees and plants did all these amazing things. It’s astounding that when you cut down a tree, other trees step in to deliver nutrients to the stump via the roots. That kind of makes me sad in a way; it’s like they’re grieving for its loss. I do love trees and forests, and feel at home when walking through or nearby them. The fact they communicate through fungi, sound, etc. is fascinating. Thanks for your thoughtful and amazing comments and for checking out Patricia’s review! Her book was excellent and I’d recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction at its best. 🌲

Thank you Ada. Yes, as I said the your poem made me think about a book I just finished reading. The book made some seemingly outrageous claims trees and plants but it is backed up by a lot of peer reviewed research. Trees and plants are amazing and it is only recently that we’ve started figuring it out. I will post a review on this book.

Ada, first, I loved how your poem mirrors the speaker and the tree so intimately, turning loss into something shared and quietly devastating.

And thank you so very much for this amazing review! It made me so happy to discover that Kate’s story got you invested in this human side of Vlad Dracula that I try to unveil within my books. 🙂

Hi Patricia! I really enjoyed your book! It had me immersed the entire time. You have a way of writing that really speaks to the reader, drawing them deep into the folds of the story.

Yes, the human side of Vlad Dracula really had me enthralled. I always craved something over and above the vampire cut-out figure, and your book nailed it! When Secrets Bloom is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve come across; I’ll be sure to recommend it to others!

Thanks for the kind comments about my poem; I really appreciate it!

As an aside, I meant to mention that I’ve posed mini 5-star reviews of this book and Dreamland on Amazon and Goodreads, which should show up in a few days. I loved your photo/prose combination in Dreamland; the historical aspects really had me enthralled! 🌸😊
