Dreaming of becoming a screenwriter in Hollywood, Ruth Saunders embarks on pursuing her dream. She’s been through a lot in life. Her parents died in a car crash when she was very young, and the accident left her with permanent facial scars. When her script, The Next Best Thing, finally gets the green light, Ruth faces some tough choices, bringing her face to face with the stark realities of trying to make a television show in Hollywood.

As with all of Jennifer Weiner’s books, three-dimensional characters is what drives the narrative forward. Ruth Saunders is a protagonist the reader can genuinely root for. Her scars make her feel like an outsider, a situation that is further exacerbated by the unrealistic beauty standards that plague the movie business. As this is her first show, she is very idealistic, striving to make a program that reflects how real women look, one that others can identify with. However, constant demands and interference from executives and even, at certain points, the actors themselves, force her to continually make concessions that chip away at her principles.

A central theme is the tremendous pressure imposed upon women who are trying to succeed in Hollywood. This includes Ruth, as well as the actors. Ruth cannot pick her own lead actress, as they aren’t slim enough, or famous enough, and the fight to retain even a nugget of control over her own show makes this novel both deeply immersive and depressingly illuminating. Even Cady Stratton, the actress chosen to play the leading part in Ruth’s show, is under constant scrutiny, which stems from the media. Like many actresses, she is plagued by her own insecurities, due to being rejected on unfair, appearance-based grounds in the past.

Fans of romance won’t be disappointed with this book, and the blossoming relationship between Ruth and her colleague and biggest supporter, Little Dave, is both genuine and heartfelt. Like Ruth, he is also at a disadvantage, in the context of Hollywood (he is disabled and uses a wheelchair). There is genuine chemistry between this pair, and as a reader, I couldn’t help but hope that they would finally fall for one another.

With its unflinching yet entertaining focus on the complex and oftentimes frustrating process of trying to make a television program in Hollywood, The Next Best Thing is bound to keep you enthralled throughout. I’d highly recommend it!

Excellently written review, Ada! Sounds like a really good book. Hollywood can definitely treat people, especially women, very badly.

(I once heard Jennifer Weiner speak at a conference. She was a good speaker.)

Hi Dave! Thanks so much for checking out the review and for your kind comments. Wow, that is so cool that you saw Jennifer Weiner speak at a conference!! I’m sure, if she speaks as she writes, she was very amusing. I love her sense of humour. Yes, I know what you mean about Hollywood – it seems like a hard place to “make it” as a woman, with many enforced beauty standards too. Thanks again for stopping by! 😊🌸

Hi. Weiner once was a staff writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer. I used to read some of her articles (I lived in Philadelphia back then). She left the paper when her first novel became a smash hit. I think she still lives in Philadelphia.

While I have not read any of her books, I have seen a movie called In Her Shoes (Β that scene where Cameron Diaz’s character (who has difficulty reading) reads a poem for her sister’s wedding makes me cry every time), which is based on Jennifer Weiner’s book. This is a great review of a book that sounds as though it confirms what I’ve long thought about Hollywood and the film-making industry in general: that having one’s book made into a film isn’t the dream that many authors imagine it to be. ‘Total control’ are the magic words, from what I’ve read, although it’s nigh-on impossible to get, meaning that authors can’t choose the actors who they think would fit the characters, and are powerless to stop swathes of the book from being ruthlessly cut. That’s just my opinion, however; I ought to read the book to see what happens. Thanks for sharing, Ada, I’ll check it out. πŸ™‚

It seems it’s always been that way, those at the top calling the shots.
Still, it’s worse now with groups of companies with groups of producers all using tech to keep a non collective eye on you.

Email chains can include a lot of people all telling 1 creative different things, at all times of day and night due to location time differences.

        That is just one example.

Ada, it’s my plasure to visit your blog! I trust all is well in Ada world. Take care!

Oh, wow, Resa! I never thought of that!! Tech must make it worse, with emails, etc. adding ways of getting round people (without their agreement) and causing confusion. It must make everything so much worse than when there were just phones! I totally never thought of that. It sounds like this can be quite triggering for someone who’s experienced this world, so I really appreciate you stopping by and commenting. All’s well with me, thanks; just busy reviewing these days! Hope you are good, too, Resa. It’s always such a joy to touch base with you xxxπŸ’œπŸ‚πŸŒΈ

        My pleasure, Ada!

Imagine trying to shop for character costumes, and a bunch of producers are sitting in an office in another city, waiting for your Face Time call, so they (control freaks) can see what you are about to buy.

This is why period stories are so great. There is no store to buy the clothes at. Many are built in the studio.
I would never do another show, unless it’s period.

I always enjoy our conversations! XOπŸ’œπŸ‚πŸŒΈ

Ooh, I never thought of that, Resa!! That’s incredible. Of course, period costumes must come with some flexibility- I’d never considered that. And that sounds awful, with people checking everything you do, keeping an unmoving “eye” on you. I felt the central character’s anxiety and disappointment in the book that her script was interfered with at every point. It seems like a hard slog to be heard! Thanks for your insight and interesting comments; it’s much appreciated! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’πŸŒΌ
