I’ve been desperate to find a dark fantasy romance for a while now, and The Aspect of Essence certainly didn’t disappoint!

What I LOVED about this novel was the different points of view used throughout. This really kept my attention, and helped me, as the reader, to identify with each character and see the world through their eyes. For example, Serenna, who is an elf princess, is sent off to military academy to learn how to utilise her magic effectively against the wraith (the elves’ enemy). She is very different from Jassyn, who is a healer. His breeding potential and bloodline are viewed unfavourably by the eleven council, which makes things difficult for him. Meanwhile, Lykor, the Wraiths leader, shares his body with another presence, which can inhabit him when he’s asleep.

The forced proximity trope is present in this novel, and I loved the way this helped to peel away the layers of protective armour around the characters as the story developed. Serenna’s growth as a princess is a unique aspect that I enjoyed a lot, and she certainly becomes more comfortable in her own skin as the plot unfolds. I also enjoyed seeing things from the baddie (Jassyn’s) perspective, which adds an unusual and intriguing touch to the narrative.

There isn’t much spice in the story, although none was needed, as the suspense and world-building are right on point. I would say, as this is dark fantasy, there were some triggering topics, but the author was very clear about these at the start of the book, which was much appreciated! All in all, this is a great, immersive story, with memorable characters and plenty of tension, suspense, and emotion! Would highly recommend.

    Thanks Ada!

Although not my fave genre, you’ve made it sound intriguing.

Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard the term “dark fantasy romance”.Β

Is this a fave genre of yours? Do you have a fave?

Still, I do have a few books by world building author D. Wallace Peach in my TBR pile, and they will get read.

    Love your reviews, be well!

      Hello dear Resa!

Thanks so much for stopping by to check out the review and for your kind comments. Yes, I know what you mean; “dark fantasy” is a new genre of romance for me, too. I’d heard of it before, but hadn’t tried it, but I enjoyed The Aspect of Essence a lot.

I wouldn’t say I had a fav genre (I love all kinds of romance!). I guess I enjoy dipping my toe in different kinds of books, just to see if I like them, and this hit the mark! Hope your New Year has gotten off to a good start. Wishing you lots and lots of happiness and success for 2025! πŸŒΈπŸŒΈπŸŒΈπŸ˜ŠπŸ“š

This is super duper interesting! So sorry for not commenting sooner: I set up my new computer a couple of days ago, and it wasn’t allowing me to access WordPress properly and kept locking me out, so I was super stressed, desperate to catch up with my likes, and must’ve missed this. ☹️

I really like dark fantasy, Ada,and the lack of steaminess is actually a plus for me. An intriguing bad guy? That works! Lykor’s body being inhabited while he sleeps was another element that caught my attention. Thanks for sharing the book and your review. I’m going to check it out.

I like dark fantasy because there’s usually an element of unpredictability in terms of what happens to the protagonist and his/her allies. It can get quite grim. And tense! The tour is going well and the dog is fitting in great. We feel so lucky. πŸ• Happy Weekend!
